So you have this incredible trip planned to New York City. The Big Apple. It’s going to be an entire week full of high end shopping, world class dining, Broadway plays, and some amazing sight seeing. Or maybe you are planning on spending a week with your toes in the sand surrounded by a cool breeze on a beach somewhere. What could possibly mess that up? Enter the flu. We all know all too well that nothing takes away the enjoyment of a vacation quite like being sick.
We were filming a Christmas show in Knoxville, Tennessee a few years ago. It was supposed to be a fun week full of ice skating, Elf of the Shelf scavenger hunts, peppermint treats, and glass blowing. That’s what it was supposed to be. But instead it was a miserable week of ice skating, Elf on the Shelf scavenger hunts, peppermint treats, and glass blowing. I was sick the whole week. Imagine touring the prestigious Tennessee Theatre while feeling nauseous the entire time. It’s not fun. And on top of all that, I had to be on camera because the show must go on. That’s certainly a piece of history that I do not want to repeat itself. That’s when I realized how important it is to take care of yourself when traveling.
Here are 10 tips for staying healthy while you travel:
1. Get plenty of sleep
Getting adequate sleep is an important part of your overall health and well being and it allows the body to repair itself and be fit and ready for the next day.
2. Stay hydrated
It’s so easy to get dehydrated while traveling, especially on air planes and on hot days.
3. Go for a walk every day
Nothing is better than fresh air and exercise.
4. Protect your skin with SPF
Wear sunscreen. Period. It prevents premature aging and we all know sunburn hurts.
5. Take breaks throughout the day
Pace yourself so you don’t get too tired.
6. Bring healthy snacks
Because who really eats healthy when they travel. Seriously.
7. Bring Vitamin C with you
Vitamin C can do wonders for when you are feeling a little under the weather. I personally take Emergen-C with me when I leave town.
8. Keep up with your vaccinations
Especially a flu shot
9. Wash your hands often
You don’t have to be fanatical about it but wash your hands often and always have hand sanitizer with you. And also, don’t touch your face!
10. Use Lysol or Clorox wipes to wipe down your hotel room
Especially frequently touched surfaces.
