Just because you go to a certain destination on vacation doesn’t mean you have to spend the entire vacation there. Some of the best places to see are just outside of major destinations. Virginia is full of destinations that would make great day trips. Here are my top 3:
If you are visiting Williamsburg, Va, why not venture out for more history and spend the day in Jamestown. Jamestown, located on the banks of the James River, was the site of the first permanent settlement of the English colony in America. While you are there, you have plenty of opportunities to learn all about that settlement as well as climb aboard the replicas of the three ships that brought the colonists to Virginia. You can even spend some time learning the real story behind Pocahontas and John Smith.
2. Water Country USA
Water Country is also a great place to spend the day if you are spending some time in Williamsburg in the summer. Williamsburg can get really hot that time of year so a day at a water park is the perfect way to stay cool. With a variety of slides and rides, the fun really is endless. For those that prefer a more relaxing atmosphere, they offer a wave pool and a lazy river that you can never get tired of.
If you like history, you will love Monticello as it is Thomas Jefferson’s birthplace. Not only can you walk through the property and tour the house, but you can also take an outside tour that focuses on the experiences of the enslaved people of Monticello plantation. In fact, you can even take an interactive tour from the viewpoint of the Heming’s family, one of the best documented enslaved families in the United States that lived and worked on the plantation. It’s a great way to spend the day if you are visiting Charlottesville, VA.
